THE PEN-HI LAKETTES FIELD HOCKEY TEAM
THE GRASSCUTTER CLASSIC

14TH ANNUAL

The 14th Annual Grasscutter Classic will be held on September 27 & 28, 2002.

This year's tourney was an 8 team affair, with teams from the Kootenays, the Okanagan, the Lower Mainland, and (for the first time) Victoria. In the Gold Pool were: J.L. Crowe (Trail), Princess Margaret, Glenlyon-Norfolk (Victoria), and Pen-Hi. In the Purple Pool are: KSS (Kelowna), SOSS (Oliver), RSS (Rossland) and Fleetwood Park (Surrey).

Three fields were used for the tournament: Pen-Hi Upper, Pen-Hi Lower, and KVR. (Special thanks to KVR for loaning their field, and to  School District 67's Maintenance Staff for an outstanding job of preparing the fields, and providing the necessary equipment and amenities. Thanks also to Mr. Findlay and Mr. Allen for assistance in lining the fields.  The Lakettes cruised through their pool undefeated, as did the KSS Owls in theirs. In crossover semi-final action, against a strong Rossland team, Marley Holowach notched the only goal of the game through tenacity and persistence, and KSS downed Glen Lyon Norfolk 1-0 also, to set the stage for yet another Pen-Hi - KSS Final. A large crowd was treated to some excellent hockey action in the championship match. Pen-Hi struck first, with Marley Holowach finishing on a nice setup by Kayla Pruss at 20:45 of the first half. Before the half ended tied it up with a goal that was similar to Pen-Hi's.  The second half was scoreless, and for the second year in a row, KSS went on to win the trophy in a penalty stroke shootout.
In five games played, Pen-Hi allowed only 1 goal against, while scoring 21 goals themselves.
The Lakettes have won the Grasscutter Championship a total of 9 times in the 14 year event. The Tournament was not held in 1992 or 1993 because the Pen-Hi fields were being reconstructed.

A traditional special attraction at the "Grasscutter"
is the "LONGEST FLICK CONTEST." A Medal is awarded to the player who can penalty stroke the ball for the longest distance.

Each game will be 45 minutes in length, with 25 minute halves, and a 5 minute halftime. Ties are settled in a penalty stroke shootout.

2001 TOURNAMENT SUMMARY: Both the Pen-Hi Lakettes and the KSS Owls cruised through pool play and their respective semi-finals before meeting (as often has been the case) in the Final. Pen-Hi scored first in the 18th minute, but KSS tied it up before the end of the half. The second half was scoreless. In penalty strokes, after the first 10 strokes it was still tied. In sudden death, KSS prevailed, and the Owls took the trophy home to Kelowna.
