The Field Hockey Lakettes have, since 1989, won 10 of 14 Okanagan Valley Zone Championships. Every one of the finals has been very close, hard fought, action packed, sometimes controversial, and exciting. Pen-Hi had not won a Valley Championship between 1965 and 1985. In 1985, Heather Quamme scored an overtime goal against KSS, to win the "Valleys" for the first time in 20 years. In 1989, Christy Bevington got the overtime winner over KSS to start the 10 of 14 string. In 1990, the Lakettes won again, this time by 2 goals, which historically is a rarity, as most games have been won by only a goal. That 1990 squad went on to win the British Columbia Provincial AAA Field Hockey Championship. In '91 the Lakettes "threepeated" as Valley Champs, but lost in '92 to the Owls. In '93 the Lakettes finished 2nd in league play, but Reagan Christianson came up big, as she scored all 4 Lakettes goals, in 2-0 and 2-1 wins over Rutland and Kelowna, respectively. In '94 a team with only 4 grade 12's upset a strong team from Oliver in the final, in a shootout, after an overtime tie. Goalie Janet Filipenko argueably "stole" this game for the Lakettes. In '95 a Pen-Hi powerhouse won the final by a 2-0 score, (both goals by Nicki Morgan who holds the Lakettes season record for goals in a single season with 42) and in '96 an undefeated Lakettes team handed KSS another defeat before going on to finish 2nd in the Provincial Championships as they had done in '89, and '95. In '97, it was a different story, as a strong Lakettes team lost the Valleys before hosting the Provincials and finishing 3rd in the B.C.'s. Pen-Hi won the Valleys again in '98 and '99, before stumbling in 2000, losing the final in a shootout. Last year (in '01) Pen-Hi finished 2nd in league play, but travelled to Kelowna and defeated KSS in penalty strokes, after yet another overtime tie. The Lakettes of 2001 went on the finish second in Provincials for the fourth time. 2002 saw one more titanic struggle between Pen-Hi and KSS resulted in a 1-0 penalty stroke shootout win for KSS after a scoreless 60 minutes of regulation and 10 minutes of sudden-death overtime play.
