FURTHER INFORMATION ON THE LAKETTES FROM THE COACHES:

Ask the Lakettes players, past or present, and most, if not all of them will tell you that playing on the Lakettes Team has been a very enjoyable and rewarding experience for them. Many former players have said that playing on the Lakettes has been the best team experience of their lives. Written testamonials from former players are available for prospective players' perusal. The team works very hard in striving to be the best they can be, but there is a lot of FUN involved too. In fact one of the lessons of being on the team is that hard work can be very enjoyable. We truly believe that though "The scores of athletic contests may soon be forgotten, sincere friendships will live forever" The value of the team is emphasized. This not a team of one or two stars; this is a team of 18 stars, each one with something very valuable to contribute.

THINGS TO CONSIDER FOR THIS FALL'S PROSPECTIVE PLAYERS:

All grade 11 and 12 girls who enjoy playing field hockey are encouraged to tryout during the first week of school in September. Tryouts begin on the first day of school (Tuesday) following the completion of classes on that day. The tryouts continue on Wednesday and Thursday at 3:30 p.m. The annual Sicamous Run is held on Friday, and on Saturday morning an intersquad game is held, possibly followed by a picnic and/or other activities, depending on weather and other factors. The final tryout is held on Monday afternoon of the second week of school. (The team goes to UBC on September 13 and 14.) Competition for the 16 positions is usually stiff, but players find the experience enjoyable and a growth experience. There are often surprises in who makes the team and who doesn't. Skill, speed, strength, and ability are obviously important, but coaches also look for attitude, coachability, positional and team play, and desire. End of season potential is another factor.

GET ACQUAINTED SESSIONS!!!!!!!!!

Prior to tryouts, during the week before school starts, two "Get Acquainted" sessions are held on Pen-Hi's Upper Field at 3:15.These sessions will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, August 28 and 29. The sessions are low pressure, fun, and not mandatory, but they do give players and coaches an early opportunity to become acquainted or reacquainted, and to take part in a fun scrimmage. They are a bit of a "warmup" prior to the following week's tryout sessions. Season schedules will be given to players so that the degree of commitment required can be shared with parents.

Regardless of previous experience or accomplishments, every tryout receives an equal opportunity to make the team. The tryout process is intentionally lengthy, so that each tryout will have ample opportunity to display the attributes described in the previous paragraph.

Student Athletes who are serious about playing Lakettes Field Hockey would be well advised to do some running, conditioning, and stick work with a ball, prior to the first tryout. No one wants to be cut from a team because they are not physically fit. As in most things in life, preparation is an important key to success.

Field Hockey Camps are available, in Penticton (July 8-11, 2002) as well as in Kelowna (August 23-25, 2002)and Vancouver. The camp experience is undoubtedly beneficial, but of course there are no guarantees that a player who goes to a camp will necessarily make the team. See www.denarisports.com for details. The Lakettes coaches are not affiliated in any way with any field hockey camps.
