THE PEN-HI LAKETTES FIELD HOCKEY TEAM
THE PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Lakettes have gone to "The B.C.s" every year since 1985!

Burnaby Lake Sports Complex, Nov. 13,14, 15, 2002.
For the first time, the AAA Tournament will consist of 12 teams rather than the usual 16. The Pools:

Pool A: Cowichan, McRoberts, Sardis
Pool B: Brentwood, South Delta, Churchill
Pool C: Oak Bay, Penticton, West Van
Pool D: Kelowna, Mt. Doug, Nelson
(Pool C crosses over with Pool A)

Thanks to Mr. Gord Barnes, Business Educator at Pen-High, game results will be posted here soon after each game.

The Lakettes will play two pool games on Wednesday, two more games on Thursday (the quarter and semi-finals?) and one game (the final?)
on Friday. The Championship Final is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. with Awards Presentations to follow at 2:30. Stay tuned for results!

Game 1, Wednesday - 12:30 p.m. Field 3 vs West Van:
The Lakettes defeated West Van 1 to 0 on a determination goal by Sarah Bouchard (on a great assist by Alyssa Collis).  This  victory ensures the Lakettes a berth in the championship round as West Van earlier defeated Oak Bay 3 to 1.  Congratulations Lakettes!!!

Game 2, Wednesday - 3:30 p.m. Field 2 vs Oak Bay:
The Lakettes tied Oak Bay 0-0 to finish 2nd in their pool.  (Earlier in the season Pen-Hi had lost to Oak Bay 4-2.) The Lakettes played very well but could not score.  Special happy 17th birthday to Raina Halla (and the coach said she played awesome).  The Lakettes next game is at 8:00 AM vs Cowichan.

Game 3, Thursday - 8:00, 9:30, or 11:00, dependant upon Wed. Results:
Penticton lost to Cowichan 1 to 0 in a great game.  Unfortunately, the girls just came up a little short.  They will have to regroup in a hurry as they play again at 12:30 (the opponent is yet to be decided).  The best they can finish is 5th. More bad news. One of the team's scorers, Lindsay Courtice received a shot on the thumb, which fractured it. She now has a cast on it and is unable to play.

Game 4, Thursday-12:30--Penticton lost to South Delta 1 to 0 in overtime and will now play tomorrow in the 7th/8th place game at 9:30 A.M. The team was dominating play until star centre-half Laura Bowman badly sprained an ankle as she led a rush into the opponent's circle. The Lakettes have now lost two excellent players to injury.
Game 5, Friday - 9:30 a.m. The Lakettes took on McRoberts, and despite another valiant effort, could not score, and came out on the short side of a 1-0 decision.

Apologies for the delay in posting results of final game and "Final Analysis." due to technical problems at the server level.

IN THE FINAL ANALYSIS:
Despite a tough draw in a tough tournament, and despite an eighth place finish, the Lakettes performed admirably. Goals were hard to come by. Injuries to key players were crucial. Team defense was outstanding, with only 3 goals against in 5 games!  An outstanding effort by a very gritty squad. Obviously there was very little to choose between the first 8 teams: Cowichan defeated Kelowna 2-1 in a penalty stroke finish after a 1-1 tie. Oak Bay finished 3rd. Pen-Hi lost to Cowichan 1-0 in a very close battle. The Lakettes had lost to Kelowna in the "Valleys" by only a stroke after a 0-0 tie. Penticton also tied Oak Bay 0-0 in pool play. Despite much adversity during the tournament, this very cohesive, hard working, positive group showed great determination, teamwork, and positive play, throughout. They showed that they were among the most physically fit, dedicated, committed, unified teams in the province. A more tenacious group you never will find!!!

One of the many positives at the Provincials was the support of our Alumni and the players' parents, relatives and friends. Despite the tournament being played mid-week, which made it impossible for many to leave work and school obligations,  former Lakettes Karla Braaten, Hailey Dettling, and Jill Snider were there to cheer on their team, and the parents were awesome in their support throughout. To everyone's surprise, Kevin Snider appeared "out of the blue" to assist the team in many ways and to act as an assistant to Coaches Bevington and Snider. The players' parents also made a very welcome and touching presentation at the close of the tournament.... All in all, just more evidence that this is a very special Lakettes Field Hockey Family!!

THE DETAILS

The Lakettes had an exciting ride at "The Big Show" playing some of their best hockey of the season, and despite losing in the exciting Championship Final, definitely peaked during the Valleys and the Provincials.

The team started a bit slowly and even though they won their first game 4-0, were not really sharp, as they "found their legs" and relearned how to play on the unique turf at the Burnaby Sports Complex. On Wednesday afternoon however, they got their attack into high gear, with an 8-0 trouncing of Burnett. Thursday morning saw Pen-Hi come away with another convincing 3-0 win, this time over Vancouver Island's No. 2 seed, Brentwood. Brentwood managed only one shot on goal, and this was the first shot that the Lakettes had allowed in the tournament.

Pen-Hi thus emerged Number One in their pool, and advanced Thursday evening to the Quarter Final, against Oak Bay. At the end of regulation time the game was scoreless, although Pen-Hi had had 16 Penalty Corners to Oak Bay's 5. Play was relatively even in the 10 minute sudden death overtime, but neither team could score. In the Penalty Stroke Tie Breaker, after 5 strokes by each team, it was a 3-3 tie. Next came sudden death strokes, and Pen-Hi won, on their third shot.

In Friday morning's Semi-Final against McRoberts of Richmond, who had previously put away Cowichan, the Lakettes had a relatively easy time of it, and played very well, with a 3-1 win.

This set the stage for yet another game between the two old rivals, Pen-Hi and the KSS Owls of Kelowna. Kelowna had defeated Cowichan in the Semi-Final, and were likely still smarting from their loss to Pen-Hi in the Okanagan Championship Final, two weeks earlier. KSS played a very determined, hard hitting game, and came away with a deserved 1-0 win. The Lakettes had their best chance early, when they were awarded a penalty stroke, but the KSS goalie made a good save, and the momentum soon shifted.

This was the first time in the history of the Tournament (going back to 1964) that there had been an All-Okanagan Final.

Pen-Hi won the B.C. AAA Championship in 1990, defeating Cowichan 2-0 in the Final. The team was also second in 1989, 1995, and 1996. The Lakettes have finished in the Final Four every year but one, since 1994.

It is always disappointing to lose in the Final, after coming so close to winning it all, but winning the Most Sportsmanlike Team Trophy was most gratifying and helped to ease the disappointment of not finishing first. There is no question that the Lakettes gave every ounce of effort they had, not only in the execution phase, but also in their preparation phase, and are winners in the true sense of the word.

As has become a valued tradition, there was a very impressive contingent of parents and other family members, Alumni, friends and other well wishers, cheering the team on as the tournament progressed.

One of the most amazing and appreciated aspects of the Provincial Tournament experience is the outpouring of support and wishes of good luck from so many former Lakettes and their parents, from Pen-Hi, and from the entire community of Penticton. It is remarkable to learn, upon the team's return to Penticton, just how many people were following the Lakettes' exploits and just how many people were rooting for the team. It has been said that "It takes an entire village to raise a child." It is also true that it takes an entire community to create a successful team!
